Reading Up on Baby Care

I’ve been reading up on infant and childcare.  I started with a textbook called Baby and Child Care.  Pretty basic stuff.  It covers a lot but doesn’t go into detail with everything.  It also has some religious undertones I’m not crazy about.  I don’t really need a childcare book to tell me to thank God everyday for my blessings.  That’s just condescending. I also still have my Developmental Psychology textbook from my child psychology college course that I can revisit.  That was a great class and I learned a lot from it but I can brush up on it.

I met with a friend for lunch at The Grove today which was really nice.  After lunch I walked around the shops.  They have a World Market there.  I really love that store.  It has a nice selection of soaps and candles (though I can’t justify spending five dollars on a bar of soap and I don’t really use candles).  They also have an imported beer and wine section and a nice selection of imported foods.  They even have Kona coffee from Hawaii.  Of course coffee and wine are off the table for me until I’m finished breastfeeding which will be at least another year.  I did get some Winter Dream tea though.  It’s chamomile based with cinnamon spices.  Pretty yummy.

I also went into the Barnes and Nobel.  I’m kind of looking for an in depth book about feeding during the first year.  How much, how often, when to introduce which foods and how much.  I ended up finding Confident Baby Care by Jo Frost.  I used to transcribe her show back in the day when I first moved to LA at my first job.  I actually really liked her show and I’m enjoying her book quite a bit.  I almost finished reading the entire thing in one day.  It goes into a lot of detail about what to expect from your baby at each stage the first year home, how to play and care for the baby and how to keep the baby safe.  It also has feeding information and suggestions for things you need for the baby so I revisited my baby registry.
